Lonny Sargent enters his second season as Utah State's head coach after guiding the Aggies to a 23-29 record and a sixth place finish in the Big West Conference in his first year. Those 23 wins were the most by USU since the 1996 season and the second most ever by a first-year head coach.

Sargent was named Utah State's head softball coach on July 26, 2004 after serving one year as the assistant to Debbie Bilbao. Sargent was hired after coming from Troy State where he served as an assistant coach for the Lady Trojans. Sargent has more than 14 years of coaching experience, from high school level to the major college level. Before working at Troy State, Sargent worked with the Mt. Hood Community College softball program for six seasons. While with Mt. Hood Community College, Sargent had a 175-98 record (.641 winning percentage) and led Mt. Hood Community College to six trips to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) Championship Tournament.

During his time at Mt. Hood, Sargent led his team to one Southern Region title in 1999, and the Columbia Basin Preseason Tournament Championship in 2002. In 2002, his team ended the season with a 32-16 record, became runners-up in the NWAACC Championship Tournament, and finished third in the Southern Region.

Sargent was also a head coach at Warner Pacific College, his alma mater, in Portland, Ore., where he served for four seasons. In 1992, Sargent led the Knights to the league championship. Also, from 1989-1996, Sargent spent many of his summers coaching several club teams in Oregon. Since 1991, he has organized and run more than 15 softball clinics, as well as hitting camps, and speed and quickness camps.

Sargent is currently a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. He has two children, Brock, 13 and McKenzie, 12.
