USU Gymnast Excels in Every Aspect Of Her College Career

Dec. 7, 2006

LOGAN, Utah - Writer: Leisa Meadows

Ashley Barr, a graduate student in political science at Utah State, balances her time between her earning her pre-law degree and participating on the Utah State Women's Gymnastics Team.

"I love gymnastics, but it is only temporary," Barr said. "The education I receive at Utah State will help me in the rest of my life by building a firm foundation for my future career, so I take it very seriously and strive to do my best."

According to Barr, the gymnastics team trains 20 hours a week in the gym and three to four hours a week lifting weights and running.

"I manage my time between school and sports by planning out each week to make sure I have time to get everything done," Barr said.

Making time for gymnastics practice and homework can be challenging, Barr said. However, making time for other things in life and maintaining a good balance can be the biggest challenge for a student-athlete.

"In addition to keeping up in school and sports, it's also important to have good eating habits, get enough sleep and maintain a social life," Barr said.

Study hall sessions help assist student-athletes keep up on their academic work, and tutors are available for nearly all of the general subjects required by the university.

"The tutors and study sessions available to student-athletes have been a great asset in my academic career," Barr said. "I've used them on several occasions."

Travel requirements can also present a challenge to student-athletes trying to excel in the classroom.

"Talking with your professors and building an understanding relationship with them is really important," Barr said. "They are there to help you."

People in the athletic office also offer a source of support for student-athletes. They are available to assist student-athletes with any academic or athletic concerns.

Barr said, USU athletic director, Randy Spetman and associate athletic director, Jana Doggett, always have their doors open and are always willing to listen to student-athletes. "The best advice I have for student-athletes who want to excel in school is stay disciplined and use all of the available resources," said Barr.
