Jasmine Minion Named America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete Of The Week

Utah State gymanst Jasmine Minion has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, April 14, it was announced on Monday. The award is voted on by a state media panel. Minion, a freshman from Memphis, Tenn., posted a season-best 9.900 on vault, in finishing in a three-way tie for second at the NCAA North Central Regional Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. The 9.900 on vault is USU's highest score on the apparatus this season and is tied for the third-highest score in school history, as Minion becomes the ninth Aggie gymnast to notch a 9.900. Minion ends the season with a 9.759 season average on vault, which is the 11th-best season average on the apparatus in USU history. This honor is the second of the season for USU gymnastics, as Megan Tschida earned the award on March 31. Nominees from other sports included: MEN'S TRACK - Junior Seth Wold (Highland, Utah) won the 10,000 meters in a time of 30:58.35 and was second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:31.55 this past weekend at the UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational. Both times were not only personal bests as well as the best times in the WAC this year, but were the 10th-best in school history in the 10,000 and the ninth-best time in the 5,000. The 5,000 and 10,000 meter races were only an hour apart. WOMEN'S TRACK - Junior Katie Thatcher (Paradise, Utah) posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 400 meter hurdles last weekend at the UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational. Thatcher finished in fifth-place in the event with a season-best time of 60.68 time, which is the second-fastest time in the WAC this year and ranks as the 10th fastest in school history. MEN'S TENNIS - Sophomore Alex Thatcher (Paradise, Utah) led Utah State to a 1-1 record last week with a 7-0 win against Northern Colorado and a 7-0 loss at Weber State. Thatcher began the week with a three-set loss to Weber State, before notching his first win of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Northern Colorado at No. 6 singles. Thatcher also paired with junior Matt Braithwaite to post an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles against UNC. WOMEN'S TENNIS - Freshman Hailey Swenson (North Salt Lake City, Utah) went 2-0 at No. 2 singles during the week, as Utah State lost a pair of matches to Weber State, 4-3, and Northern Colorado, 6-1. Swenson recorded a pair of straight set wins with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against WSU and a 6-1, 6-1 win against UNC. SOFTBALL - Junior first baseman Aubrie Stroman (Red Bluff, Calif.) led Utah State to a 1-3 record last week, as the Aggies posted their first shutout of the season, 7-0, at Idaho State and was then swept by New Mexico State, 5-3, 5-4, and 14-1 after five innings. Stroman batted .500 overall, going 6-for-12 at the plate recording two RBI, one home run and one double. Stroman went three-for-three at Idaho State with a run scored, and was two-for-three in game one against NMSU on Saturday, with a home run.
